Review

The Wooden CameraIn this South African movie two black boys find a dead man near a railway. The man has a gun and a video camera. One of the boys takes the gun, the other the camera. Sipho uses his gun to mug people on the street and Madiba uses his newly acquired video camera to capture the inner beauty of the environment in which he lives. The two found objects cause profound changes in the boys; Sipho starts to feel attracted to the criminal life, while Madiba decides he wants to become a filmmaker.

The Wooden CameraThings between Sipho and Madiba get even worse after they meet Estelle, a rich white girl that attracted Madiba’s attention when he was filming on the streets of Cape Town. Estelle will open Madiba’s eyes to a world he wasn’t aware of. Through her he connects Mr. Shawn, a music teacher that feeds Madiba’s passion for making films.

The Wooden CameraThis film has a very attractive premise and is worth watching. On the technical side it is evident that several of the actors and the director lack the experience that could have made this an excellent movie.
