Review
This intense Korean film tells the story of two brothers who get drafted into the South Korean army to fight in the Korean War. While Jin-tae’s intentions are to figure out a way to get his brother released so that he can finish school, Jin-seok simply wants for the two to survive the war and return home together. Unfortunately the war will be long and bloody, and even though both brothers act out of love for the other and their family, as time passes their different views will put a strain on their relationship.
The scenes of battle in this film are terrifying, those viewers with sensible stomachs consider yourselves warned. The style of the war sequences brings Saving Private Ryan back to memory, the fast and chaotic editing feels terribly real, at times you may feel the urge to duck to avoid getting hit by a bullet. But overall the film has more of an emotional and even melodramatic tone that is likely to bring tears to your eyes in several scenes. The combination of battle and brother/family relationships works pretty well, the story captures you right from the start and will keep you interested until the end. If you are looking for a war film with a soul you have found one here.
