Review
In this interesting documentary we follow Sudanese refugees Santino and Peter as they adapt to their new life in the United States. The film begins with them still in the refugee camp in Kenya where they lived for many years, making plans and looking forward to a bright future. Their expectation is that in America they will be able to get an education, support themselves and also help the family and friends that they are leaving behind. Unfortunately once arrived in Houston they find that this isn’t so easy to achieve and have to face an increasing number of difficulties to adapt to the American way.
This film provides a revealing insight into the difficulties of “starting from scratch” in the United States, and there are also brief accounts of the tragic events that occurred early in the life of these two men. This is one of two recent documentaries about the Lost Boys of Sudan, the other is God Grew Tired Of Us. Both films have a similar structure and contents, but I have found this one to be slightly less organized than the other.
