Review
Liam is a little boy who lives in Liverpool in the 1930s, the time of the Great Depression. He and his family are falling into extreme poverty, after his father is laid off his older brother and sister have to find work to bring a little bit of money. Liam, who also has a small speech impediment, attends a Catholic school and is getting ready to take his first Holy Communion.
While Liam has trouble deciding if having accidentally seen his mom naked is a sin that needs to be confessed or not, his older sister Teresa becomes an accomplice to the infidelities of the woman of the rich Jewish family she now works for as a maid, and Liam’s unemployed dad grows angrier and angrier not being able to provide for his family, finding an outlet to his anger when he joins the Fascist movement, with terrible consequences for himself and his family.
Liam is a sad and tragic story of the Depression period. Director Stephen Frears created a solid film with good acting and a well constructed plot.
