Review
The Iron Giant is an animated film loosely based on the novel Iron Man by Ted Hughes. The giant of the title is a huge metallic robot that falls from the sky into a small Maine town. Soon after his arrival to Earth a lonely boy named Hogarth finds him and becomes his friend. But Hogarth soon finds that being a friend of a giant robot is not easy. First of all, he needs to hide his new friend from his mom, who probably would not accept a giant robot as a guest in their home. Second, the robot eats large quantities of metal, that’s his food, and Hogarth needs to figure out how to get him the food he needs without attracting attention of the town. To make matters worse, a government agent arrives in town after receiving reports from a few people who spotted the robot.
This is a film that adults and children can enjoy together. It is definitely not a children movie in the traditional Disney style, there are no song interruptions or silly jokes, for example, so very small children may find it a bit difficult to follow. The film has a very solid and engaging plot with well developed characters and exceptional voice acting by the whole cast. As a word of advice, keep a Kleenex box handy when you watch this film, the tense and emotionally charged ending is bound to get tears out of you.
For some inexplicable reason this film went pretty much unnoticed in theathers, but it has received the praise of critics from all over the world. Director Brad Bird (who then went on to direct Pixar’s The Incredibles, another great animated film) created a masterpiece that is simply perfect. The Iron Giant is definitely one the best animated movies of all times, possibly the absolute best.
