Review
When civil war erupted in Sudan thousands of young boys fled the country on foot, first to Ethiopia, and later to Kenya. They separated from their families, most didn’t even know if their relatives survived the genocide in their home country. These boys are known as the “Lost Boys of Sudan”. In this documentary we follow three of these lost boys as they relocate to the United States and begin a new life after being in the Kenya refugee camp for ten years.
The film introduces John, Panther and Daniel while they are spending their last days in Kenya. Having lived all their lives in extreme poverty, they know very little of the civilized world they are about to enter and worry about their ability to deal with it. One of them, for example, expresses his concern about not being able to get used to electricity, something he heard of but has never seen in his life. Once they arrive in America they face a tough period of adaptation. Two other interesting aspects are their efforts to locate their lost families and their interest in helping the refugees that haven’t been as fortunate as them and are still living in refugee camps in Africa.
This documentary keeps the viewer interested all the way through the end. The three subjects provide honest accounts of their feelings and experiences as they try to adapt to this strange land that is America to them.
