Review
In this French comedy François Pignon, an accountant at a condom manufacturing company, overhears a conversation between two coworkers about a management decision to fire him. François has an ex-wife and a teenage son that avoid him, he has no friends and those who know him consider him a bore. The news that he will soon be losing his job make him consider suicide. But then he meets a new neighbor, who has an idea that will save his job. François simply needs to come “out of the closet”, that is, pretend to be gay, and the company will have no choice other than to keep him to prevent being seen as discriminatory.
The Closet is a cute little comedy with a few funny moments. Of particular interest is the participation of veteran actor Gérard Depardieu playing a gay hater coworker of François who as a joke is made to believe that management is considering firing him instead of François unless he changes his attitude towards gays.
