Review

Big EdenHenry Hart is a successful artist that lives a lonely life in New York. When his grandfather suffers a stroke he makes a trip back home to Big Eden, Montana to visit and take care of him during his recovery. In his home town he will find Dean, the guy he had a crush on back in school. Dean is divorced, and all too happy to see Henry again. And then there is Pike, a shy American Indian who also went to school with Henry, and as it turns out, always had a crush on him. So far this looks like your average gay triangle love story, but believe me, there is nothing average about this story.

Big EdenThe thing is, Big Eden is a town like no other. Two kinds of people live in this place: those who are gay and those who are not. But all those who are not gay are definitely pro-gay. The difference doesn’t matter much to anyone there, the entire population of Big Eden lives in harmony and nobody cares about who is or is not gay. When an old widow finds that Henry is still single she throws a party in his honor and invites all the single women in town. Seeing that Henry isn’t too interested the next day she throws a similar party but this time she invites all the single gay guys. And when Pike, who owns the general store, needs to provide daily meals for Henry and his grandfather, the town’s residents drop everything they are doing and help him prepare the most spectacular dishes that, they hope, will draw Henry’s attention to him.

Big EdenIf you are gay you’ll probably like this film, I suspect there is enough material to keep you interested in spite of the film’s flaws. While the idea of the film is original, the acting is mediocre at best, and the characters are all flat and stereotypical, they seem to go through life without any real motivations. I have also found it interesting that the female roles in this film are all minor and mostly with motherly attributes, there is obviously a view of the world that is strongly gay male biased.
