Sébastien earns a living doing construction jobs. While doing repairs on a roof he overhears the house owner talk about an envelope he is expecting, and that after following the instructions in it he will make a lot of money. The man unexpectedly dies of a drug overdose, and the envelope ends up in Sébastien’s hands. Also being in need of money, he decides to take the man’s place and follow the instructions contained in the envelope, without knowing what he is getting into. And what he gets into is a clandestine game where men gamble on other men’s lives.
13 Tzameti is shot in black and white and runs for an economical 86 minutes. It begins very slowly, for the first half hour it isn’t clear what’s going on and what’s going to happen. Once Sébastien begins his trip to Paris to participate in the game the film picks up pace, and the sequences that depict the actual game are extremely intense. But the somewhat simplistic plot, the underdeveloped characters, and the inexperienced George Babluani in the leading role all contribute to an overall product of amateurish quality.
